Dr. Avendaño started her carrier as an oceanographer, and has been involved in coastal engineering, adaptation planning, sediment management and coastal process for over 20 years.  She has led multiple initiatives and projects as part of an interdisciplinary consortium of elected officials, scientists, scholars, and policy makers assessing coastal vulnerability, designing and implementing adaptation strategies for California, Mexico, and the European Union.
